When a tooth is extracted, you lose a significant amount of jawbone. This occurs when the sides of the hole within the mouth collapse over time. A bone grafting procedure can preserve bone and fill the area where the roots were providing a solid foundation for replacing the missing tooth.
After a tooth is extracted, your surgeon will place a graft material in the hole where the tooth was located. This graft, which can be made up of your own bone or a synthetic material, stimulates the growth of new bone in the affected area. While a graft can be done after an extraction, it most effective when placed at the time of the extraction when there is abundant blood flow and the situation is ideal for healing.
