Antibiotic Therapy
As part of your periodontal care, your periodontist will evaluate your oral condition to determine if antibiotic therapy would be an effective adjunct to your scaling and root planing procedures. In some cases, low dosage systemic antibiotics (taken orally) are indicated to help fight the oral bacteria and speed the results from the scaling and root planing.
Another use of antibiotics for periodontal treatment is with a locally administered antibiotic in powder form that is placed directly into the infected areas, or pockets, in your gums. This is typically done during scaling and root planing and in the most problematic areas.
